Quick Review: NetNewsWire For iPhone

As part of the shipping batch of Apps to celebrate the launch of iPhone Firmware 2.0 and the included App Store, NetNewsWire didn’t come off so hot. It came off more as that stubbornly drunk always crashing the party demanding absurd amounts of Vodka to pacify underlying emotional issues. But its developers have since sent it to rehab and the newest update finally knocked it shitless with a heavy dose of reality and bug fixing.

News Flash: Old People Get Old

Ever since WWDC people have been making a fuss about Steve Jobs’ health and everytime this pops up it seems people stop what they are doing and congregate into a massive cluster fuck yelling about whether or not Steve Jobs has a cold or skipped his afternoon nap. To be frank it’s like we’re putting the guy on a pedestal the level of which a tabloid would do on a celebrity over something that affects him and not us.

I know no one wants to go through a repeat of what happened to Apple during those odd years where Steve was demoted and his rank stripped from him until he came back at the helm in ‘97 but that was the past and we’re already mixing that with the future. But to be quite frank, not much will change at Apple when Steve leaves which isn’t a knock at the hard work he’s done but he’s already started to set things in place where people he trusts can take over and not fuck up Apple.

No one is going to become horrible at what they do best at Apple if Steve Jobs departs. I think everyone there realizes this, that Steve already left his mark at Apple and should he go, there are people in place that can carry on the visions of the company on their own. As sad as it would be for him to leave the fact of the matter is change is inevitable and should be used to Apple’s advantage instead of spreading mass fear about it. Look at Microsoft, not much changes over time and things stagnate because they cater to the type of customers who need things to work how they are and be supported for a long time. There’s been enough product transitions and Interface revamps to knock off a few die hard fans who didn’t take a liking to it but look where we are now, if the PowerPC transition was never made we’d be fucked and stuck with Macs quickly dropping back into the dark ages of slow computing.

In the end it doesn’t matter if Steve Jobs leaves or not, it matters if he has already laid the ground work for other people to further the vision of Apple and not be a complete clobe of Steve Jobs to bring varietyand fresh blood into the company.

Review: Wordpress iPhone App

Blogging on the iPhone has been a mixed bag in usability. Compromises in a Blogger’s Workflow had to be made to accomodate the iPhone’s limitations such as no copy & paste, not being able to add photos and whatnot. But if you’re running a Wordpress Blog to let everyone know about your highly unimportant opinion (our is only slightly worthier in the regard that you’re reading our Blog and we’re ignoring yours) you can take that on the go with your iPhone.

How To Monumentally Fuck Up A Product Launch

It’s been a busy week for Apple, what with launching a new iPhone in newly marketed territories of Euro land, releasing Software goodies for all and bringing up their neatly bundled web service that ties into all of these. Things got awry towards the end and looking back it’s no wonder why, shit happens when you don’t plan ahead.

Numbers Game: Apple Manipulating iPhone Stock To Boost Interest?

The news that Apple has sold over 1 million iPhones during the weekend it launched is impressive considering the same feat was achieved in 74 days for the 1st generation model. But let’s take some things into account here, last year’s numbers were for the U.S alone until Apple seeped supply into Europe. This time around Apple has 22 launch countries padded with iPhones and that 1 millionth sale doesn’t look too hot considering that Apple reported 270,000 sales the first weekend last year.

Apple Kills Unlimited MobileMe Free Trials Dead

Back there was a time when Apple allowed the graces of the now defunct web service, .Mac, onto your computer for a generous 60 days to take for a test run before you shell out 99 dollars for what would then be considered an overpriced piece of shit. Free was a price point we could all agree on and much to our delights the criteria that needed to be met for an equally priced account was nothing more than a name that could be re-used to our hearts’ content. Sure exploitations of a service meant to rid your wallet of a Benjamin occurred, so much so that Apple has finally smartened up and made it a lot harder to “try out” .Mac or should I say, MobileMe more than once.

Things That Suck About The App Store

Friday Apple introduced the much anticipated iPhone App Store finally allowing native 3rd party Apps to be distributed through a medium we’re actually excited to open up our wallets like a sacrificial lamb. But Apple forgot one tiny detail: how to make sure most of these Apps don’t suck. Oh sure they brought money into the equation where developers had to rent out virtual shelf space and take a hit on their profits just to maintain a comfortable status quo. But when you have fucking idiots charging for shit that can be attained for free (like some of those ridiculous flash light Apps) from the Internet without at least tacking on some bells and whistles then we have a huge problem.

Belgium’s iPhone No Longer MIA, Just More Expensive And Globally Unlocked

Despite being one of the few launch countries, our friends in Belgium got shafted over when Mobistar pulled out on the iPhone 3G’s sell date of July 11th after they conveniently remembered the country’s corporate reaming law on phone exclusivity. After getting their shit together Mobistar attended a brief press conference to confirm that yes the iPhone 3G is coming, SIM unlocked but will rape your wallet harder than other foreign iPhones.
