iPhone 2.1 Seed Lacking Push Notification

Apple has always been that nagging parent always deciding what’s good and what it isn’t when it comes to using the iPhone. While some of those over generous methods of inducing the sensation of a great product haven’t come off so well, others are quite useful such as Push notification, unfortunately it’s being yanked from the latest developer seed of iPhone Firmware 2.1, Beta 4.
Apple announced Push Notification at WWDC as an easy to way to piggy back their servers (whether or not it will end us another ‘Mobile Meh’ has yet to be seen) and deliver updates to a users’ iPhone that emulates background processing without the drag associated it. Since it’s assumed an iPhone has an always on Internet connection, a hello every now and then back home to Apple shouldn’t hurt, but developers who are eager to implement this feature will have to wait a little longer.
Despite Apple’s overbearing NDA, word is spreading out that Push Notification has been pulled from the latest 2.1 seed in favor of further internal development. Unfortunately this leaves a lot of developers without any further understanding of how Push Notification will work in their Applications and it’s unclear wether this road bump will hinder the release of the next Firmware which has been marked for a September release. Aside from bug and security fixes, Firmware 2.1 is set to bring turn-by-turn navigation despite an early review from David Pogue citing a weak GPS antenna.
