Stashbits: iTunes 8.0.2 & iPhone 2.2

Apple has been busy streamlining the iPhone interface and improving the underlying OS through many Firmware upgrades available for current and previous generation models. The continuation of those efforts have materialized in the much awaited iPhone 2.2 Firmware update bringing various improvements and features to Maps, iTunes and Safari plus other minor interface tweaks. In addition, Apple has recently pushed out a minor update to iTunes bringing it up to version 8.0.2 and including Voice Over support amongst bug fixes.

iTunes 8.0.2

The newest update to iTunes is available through Software Update or Apple’s Software Support Page and weighs around 60 Megabytes. This minor update brings general bug and stability fixes alongside iTunes Store connectivity issues and Vocie Over support.

iPhone OS 2.2

We’ve reported about iPhone OS 2.2 previously, covering suspected features such as Google Street View, Over The Air Podcast Support and Application ratings. A previously reported rumor pinpointed towards a November 21st shipping date for the latest OS upgrade from a relatively unknown site, iPhoneHellas. Typically Apple forgoes Fridays for Software and Hardware updates but changed paced this time around by pushing Firmware 2.2 to users today.

The general list of features include many of what we’ve seen before, hardly changing as they transitioned into the final Software builds. Improvements to Safari have been made and the interface has been streamlined, unifying the Google search and URL bar. Street View has been incorporated although the current implementation could be better than just dropping a pin to navigate your surroundings.

Over The Air Podcast support is readily baked in but episodes are limited to 10 MB downloads while on the 3G or EDGE network although Wi-Fi downloads remove this cap. You can still browse Podcasts through the Podcast tab or search for them alongside songs. Video episodes can be downloaded as well but you’ll need a Wi-Fi connection to download anything since sizes range well into the couple hundred Megabyte range. You’ll also be restricted to formats playable on the iPhone which not only includes Audio formats but Video formats and resolutions compatible with the iPhone.

The new Firmware can be nabbed by checking iTunes for any available updates.
